Valencia shock Barcelona in thriller to stay top of the table

Valencia produced a magnificent performance to upset La Liga leaders Barcelona 3-2 and stay top of the table.

The game was evenly contested in the early stages, but it was Barcelona who took the lead in the 25th minute when Lionel Messi scored from the penalty spot. Valencia equalized soon after through Geoffrey Kondogbia, but Barcelona regained the lead shortly before halftime when Philippe Coutinho scored.

However, Valencia pulled off an incredible comeback in the second half. Daniel Parejo equalized in the 50th minute and then Rodrigo Moreno scored an amazing goal to put Valencia ahead in the 68th minute. Luis Suarez pegged one back for Barcelona with 10 minutes remaining, but Valencia held on to record a memorable victory.

It was a devastating loss for Barcelona, who had started the game as favorites, and they now find themselves three points behind Valencia at the top of the table.

Atletico Madrid come back to beat Leganes and stay in touch with the leaders

Atletico Madrid came back to beat Leganes 2-1 and stay in touch with the La Liga leaders Barcelona. Antoine Griezmann's penalty opened the scoring in the first half, and after Diego Costa had doubled their lead, Gabriel scored a late consolation goal for Leganes.

Manager Diego Simeone made three changes to the team that started last weekend's goalless draw against Valencia, with Lucas Hernandez, Saul Niguez and Griezmann all coming into the side at the expense of Juanfran, Koke and Nikola Kalinic.

Leganes had started the game well and created several good chances, but it was Atletico who took the lead in the 38th minute when Griezmann converted from the penalty spot after Guido Carrillo had been fouled by Dimitrios Siovas.

Costa then made it 2-0 in the 55th minute, heading home a cross from Saul Niguez after being left unmarked in the area. Gabriel pulled a goal back for Leganes in the 89th minute, but it was too little too late as Atletico held on to take all three points.

The result means that Atletico are now six points behind leaders Barcelona, but they have two games in hand. They travel to Villarreal next weekend before hosting Real Madrid in what will be their last ever derby at the Vicente Calderon stadium.

Sevilla suffer surprise home loss to Girona

Sevilla suffered a surprise 1-0 home loss to newly-promoted Girona on Saturday in their opening La Liga match.

Striker Cristhian Stuani headed in the only goal of the match in the 38th minute, as Girona recorded their first ever win over Sevilla in what was just their fourth meeting.

Sevilla midfielder Ever Banega had a chance to equalise shortly before half-time, but his effort from distance sailed just wide of the target.

The hosts came close to an equaliser after the break, but goalkeeper Gorka Iraizoz made a fine save to deny striker Wissam Ben Yedder.

Girona then sealed all three points late on when defender Pedro Alcala headed home from a corner.

The result means Sevilla have now lost both of their opening La Liga matches, having also gone down 2-1 at home to Eibar last season.

Getafe consolidate their place in Europe's top six with victory over Espanyol

Madrid-based side emerge victorious in Catalan Derby to keep La Liga rivals at bay

Getafe consolidated their place in Europe's top six on Sunday by beating Espanyol 2-0 in the Catalan Derby. Los Azulones have enjoyed an impressive season so far and are now just two points behind fifth-placed Sevilla.

The home side got off to the perfect start, taking the lead after just eight minutes through Jaime Mata. The striker headed in from a Francisco Portillo cross to make it 1-0. Getafe went on to dominate the game and could have doubled their lead before the break but for some superb saves from Diego Lopez.

The visitors did finally get on the scoresheet early in the second half, with Gerard Moreno converting from the penalty spot after Djene Dakonam was penalised for handball. However, that was as good as it got for Espanyol, who fell further behind when Jorge Molina bundled home a late effort.

With three games remaining, Getafe are well placed to secure a place in next season's Europa League. Next up for José Bordalás' side is a trip to Rayo Vallecano, before they host Girona and finish the season away at Valencia.
